The best part of summer for me is bonfires. You get to enjoy the outdoors while sitting around with friends and roasting (vegetarian!) marshmallows. My tips for the perfect bonfire are pretty simple, but it’s always those extra touches that make the night perfect. First, make sure that you have supplies for s’mores that everyone can eat. If you have friends with dietary restrictions, grab some vegetarian marshmallows, GF graham crackers, dairy free chocolate — whatever you need so that no one is left out. You can buy these in addition to the traditional ingredients if you can’t give up your favorite milky chocolate. Most of the ingredients can be sealed up in a plastic bag and thrown in the freezer (or just stored in the pantry) until the next...
One of the main complaints people have about soy (tofu, tempeh, etc.) is that it’s always trying to be something it’s not. That’s a complaint I hear about vegetarians a lot, too — why try and make something taste/feel like meat when it’s not meat? To me, it makes sense. You would season chicken or beef, so why not season tofu the same way. It’s just easy. As for why you’d make something taste/feel like meat, that’s something I’m still grappling with. Especially because something with a similar texture to real meat actually creeps me out to the point where some meat substitutes are just out for me. So for this recipe, I didn’t try to make the tempeh anything it’s not. No seasons that I think will make it...
Is my age showing? I constantly feel like I discover new things that make me feel old (for the record, 26). Waking up today after going to a concert last night and not getting home until 2 am? Old. So old. Not because I slept in until noon (because isn’t that such a 17 year old thing to do?) but because I feel SO bad about sleeping in until noon. And my feet hurt from standing in one place for hours. Ironically, seeing the band that’s been my favorite since high school made me feel so incredibly young last night. Like I’m gonna stay 18 forever. My friends know that I swear by a glass of chocolate milk the morning after a rough night, but I wanted something more refreshing...
Summer seems to just be slipping away — I feel like it used to last forever when I was younger, and now I’m lucky to have maybe 2 of my favorite summer outings a year. Let’s not even talk about all of the adventures I’ve never even had yet (tubing lazily down a river? Yup, have the tubes in my garage but have never made it to a river!). I was having friends over for a wine tasting over the weekend and wanted to feature foods that were a little more picnic-y because oh hey, picnics are another thing I just never manage to have time for. I’ve seen many a blog/instagram post featuring whipped feta on crostini with some kind of drizzle and some kind of fruit, but that...
First, I took an embarrassing amount of time to get this post up. While I was in Seattle (yes, that was in April) I took a tour of the Field Roast factory and I have to say it was a lot of fun. The pictures aren’t going to show just how cool it was, because they don’t allow photos of the actual manufacturing process. Takes all the good photos out of a factory tour, right? But at the very least we got to see how (vegan) sausage is made, even if we can’t show you, too. Tours are not something they regularly do, so we were extra appreciative of our tour guide Kiley who took time out of her day. When we walked in, this is the first thing we...
I’ve had the strongest craving for zucchini lately – I’ve fried it, thrown it in soup, sauteed it, just can’t get enough of it. I couldn’t find any at the grocery store on my last trip, so I was beyond stoked when we popped into a bulk store and I get 4 HUGE ones for $2. I obviously bought way too many, and then had to quickly prep and eat them all. Quick sweet breads are my favorite way to use up produce. And I knowwww that I have like 8,000 sweet bread recipes already, to the point where half the internet probably thinks I only eat sugary bread. #InMyDreams <— ugh, why would I hashtag in the middle of the post? Josh tried to buy a shirt at Banana...
