Moussaka is one of my favorite foods. I think about it, no joke, at least once a week. Layers of eggplant, spiced tomatoes, and a creamy topping? What’s not to love! I shared with you the quick recipe I use to meet the incessant craving on the average workday, but sometimes you need the real thing. I originally wasn’t going to share this so soon after my quick and mildly inauthentic version, but my friend Emily was desperate to make this again after I served it at my vege-versary party. So Emily, this recipe is just for you! Even though I was going for a more authentic version, I’ve still taken some strong liberties here. While the Moussaka I had in Greece was vegetarian, not all versions are. I also...
The other week when I had the worst cold of my life, all I wanted in the world was my mom’s chicken noodle soup she made for me when I was young. The real stars of the soup were the homemade noodles. They were thick like dumplings and so comforting, whether you were sick or not. I texted my mom to tell her how much I was craving those noodles, and she responded with “Just make them yourself. Just egg + flour”. Seriously? That’s the secret to one of the most delicious foods of my childhood? Luckily, I had egg substitute in the fridge (I rarely have anything like it) because I was in no mood to mess around with chia seeds or flax, in case they didn’t turn out. There...
Updated 12/8/15 – Garlic powder listed twice. Second instance should be onion powder. When I posted my sweet mustard pretzels, I made the mistake of talking up my sister’s Ranch pretzels. The result was comments saying “ooh those sound good, what’s the recipe?” And then I lied to you all. Saying the recipe was coming soon. Month later? Yeah. Not soon, Kelly. Oopsies. But looky here, I’ve finally made it up to you. See? Ranchy, pretzelly goodness. All is forgiven forever. Truth is, I was just lazy. I knew I wanted to make my own dry ranch and needed to go allll the way to the organic store to buy nutritional yeast. It’s a whopping mile away. Closer than the regular grocery store. But they close early, okay? These take...
Phew! Almost forgot about this month’s Recipe Redux. I even thought to myself yesterday “Ohh, have to remember to post that!” and then bam. Immediately forgot the date. Does that happen to anyone else? You feel like you have so much more time left in the month, and then it’s practically over. To add to my sense of “wtf is wrong with my brain”, I just realized that I was thinking it was a day later than I actually is, so I’m writing this the night before as usual. Whyyyyyy can’t I get something as basic as days right? One thing I got right? This syrup. I bought a fancy, shmancy water carbonator, pretty much only because I could. I don’t buy or drink a lot of soda, but it’s...
Even when a dinner is lackluster, I still try to suffer through the leftovers. And by “I”, I really mean Josh. Yup. I stick Josh with the reject dinners. Every. Single. Time. For the longest time, he wouldn’t even complain. Just carried them off to work and afterwards said that it made surprisingly better leftovers. After a while, I caved and took some of the failed dinner leftovers with me — soooo not good the next day. At first, I thought maybe Josh’s standards were just a little lower than mine (which is true sometimes when it comes to food) or maybe that tricking me into taking those particular leftovers had been his plan all along, but finally I just asked him. Apparently, his work has “really good seasonings” he adds to...
It should definitely come as no surprise to you that I am a crazy cat lady. Check my posts, the “About Us”, my instagram — it’s all cats, cats, cats. Because I love my kitties and (as any self respecting Whovian knows) bow ties are cool, my cats are always rocking the dapper bow tie look. How did they get so stylish? Sweet Pickles‘. No, not a crunchy and delectable treat (though, they do love green beans!) but Sweet Pickles’ Designs, the makers of adorable cat bow ties and collars. I first found them on Etsy. I could pretend I stumbled across them, but I was most definitely scouring the internet for cat bow ties. A girl has to have hobbies. I immediately bought my fur babies the Sherlock and the...
