If it hasn’t been obvious, I have a bit of an obsession with barbeque sauce. And part of that obsession includes looking for various vehicles to transport barbeque sauce into my mouth, because it’s apparently not socially acceptable to just spoon it into my mouth like people do with Nutella or peanut butter. For some reason, back-to-school time makes me think if chicken nuggets, so I figured why reinvent the wheel? Chicken nugs + BBQ sauce are natural BFFs and I can’t deny my sauce a nugget buddy. I’d remembered seeing a tempeh nugget recipe somewhere floating around the internet, but for some reason it didn’t occur to me that this was an easily Google-able inquiry (I later realized it was Hannah at Clean Eating Veggie Girl). These nuggets aren’t super...
Every year for my birthday, Josh makes me a boxed cake mix. Cherry chip cake (with his “secret” applesauce substitution for an extra moist cake) with chocolate frosting. This is my once-a-year from-a-box cake treat, and honestly there’s something I love about boxed cherry chip cake. It’s soft and fluffy and reminds me of high school. Why high school? … No idea. Every year for Josh’s birthday, I have him request whatever kind of cake he wants. One year, it was chocolate malt cake. Another year, it was a simple chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. It always results in a lot of procrastination from him, a mild amount of kicking and screaming, and a delicious end result. For some reason, he just doesn’t want to decide on cake! This year’s came about...
I had a conversation with my coworker on Monday about how he used to work at a pizza place. His entire day consisted of making pizza, talking about pizza, and eating pizza until he decided to take a job as our co-op (and later to graduate and get a fulltime job in my building). He basically had the perfect life and he threw it all away for science. As admirable as it is to science all day, sometimes you need to dedicate your time to what really matters, and that’s pizza. In part, I’m happy that summer is pretty much over. Because, like science, summer keeps me away from my true love. When the weather is warm, it’s hard to turn on the oven. When there’s so many fresh veggies, it’s hard...
We’ve been eating pizza like it’s going out of style the last few weeks. There’s a couple reasons for that 1. I accidentally bought 4 bricks of unsmoked gouda and pizza makes a great home for it 2. I’ve been working on a killer new pizza crust recipe, and 3. I just really love pizza. I had a slice of pizza for a late lunch/early dinner on Saturday and a couple hours later, I was crying for pizza. And then Sunday morning, still crying for pizza. If there’s such a thing as an unsatiable pizza lust, than I’m pretty sure I have it. Let’s call it sympathy pizza cravings because I’m so acutely aware of college students moving into their dorms the last few weeks. Whatever it is, I guess I can’t say...
I voted, and it’s apple season now. And pumpkin season. And pancake season. Basically, it’s the most wonderful time of the year (obviously tied with pumpkin spice latte season. Obviously.) I’ve never understood why people restrict pumpkin to fall. Even in the fall, I normally use it out of a can (and I imagine that’s true for >80% of the population) so why wait? I eat an apple with lunch almost every day, too. These flavors are too tasty to limit and I kind of get angry when other people get angry about posting pumpkin or apple recipes “too early”. I’ll eat pumpkin today, on Thanksgiving, on Easter, on the 4th of July… it’s just too good to pass on. What’s even better? Pumpkin + apple together. Especially when one...
Recipe 2 from the nonexistent “Best Sister in the World” e-cookbook. In case I haven’t yelled about it constantly: if I had to pick one favorite food, it’d be pancakes. So naturally, the idea of living in a dorm room, pancakeless, is the most terrifying thought in the world. I spent a long time Googling this, because obviously someone would’ve done this before, but all I could find were recipes with Bisquick or recipes with egg. While there’s a time and a place for egg, I’m obviously not a huge fan of weird flour mixes. Especially because they’re never made with whole wheat flours. I did a LOT of recipe tweaking with this (and ate some really bad pancakes in the process. I didn’t even know there was such a...
